Many years ago I was a writer and editor at a small software firm. Layout was the accountability of the illustrated designer. Before a newsletter was published, my boss proofed the copy and design. One day I was surprised to hear him say, "This is lazy layout."
I've never forgotten his illustrated term. In fact, I'm on constant surveillance for lazy layout and don't want my books to report it.
Jewelry Boxes
Some publishers don't want authors to become complex in layout at all, while others welcome the author's input. I have a graduate degree in art schooling and have taken many make courses, including printmaking and jewelry design. These courses served me well when I was teaching and serve me well in my writing career.

My 30th book is in output now. The publisher sent me the first layout draft and asked for my opinion. At first, when I looked at the layout, I opinion it was okay. But the more I looked at it, the more implicated I became about the lack of white space. From my perspective and training the layout was basic -- not a "grabber."
During more than 30 years as an independent journalist, I've learned many things about layout. I know tips that ask reading and tips that detract from it. Joel Friedlander writes about "Book make to Sell: 5 Book Interior Page Layout Mistakes to Avoid" on The Book Designer website. He thinks layout should be easy to read and account for (support) the author's information.
On his list of things to avoid: blank pages on the right side, putting numbers on pages that shouldn't have numbers, having page one on the left, and typesetting without justifying. Personally, I think too slight white space should be on his list.
Since my publisher asked for my input I in case, granted it. To make my thoughts clear, I put them in categories: spacing, easy reading, and optical interest. I also kept my comments short. In the spacing category, I said my bulleted lists needed an extra space colse to them.
In the easy reading category, I asked for two lists to be boxed and lightly shaded. Unfortunately, I haven't had any computer training and don't know how to do this. But my computer savvy granddaughter does, and she formatted the lists for me.
In the optical list category, I asked for the lesson titles to be more eye-catching and sent examples to my publisher. I also asked, in a follow-up email, for chapters to begin halfway down the page. This white space would give the reader a place to rest his or her eyes, jot down notes, and emphasize the titles.
I'm blessed to have a publisher that asks for layout input. All of my suggestions may not be used, but some may be. As always, my goal is to furnish the best inherent product. Applying my art training helps me -- and my publishers -- to accomplish this goal.
